NEW YORK CITY – Fountain House Gallery and Studio, representing artists living with mental illness, announces its participation as a 2024 Organization in Residence at Governors Island, New York, NY. The Fountain House space, located at Nolan Park #8B, will open with a Press Preview on Friday, May 17, 11am-2pm and will be open to the public Friday through Sunday, May 17 – August 11, 11am-5pm.
“We are excited to return to Governors Island after being designated as an Organization in Residence for the first time last year,” said Rachel Weisman, Director of Fountain House Gallery. “This year, during the three-month term, our artists will construct a site-specific installation titled Meditations on Medication: The Pill Bottle Project. We’re pleased to invite the greater New York City community to participate in the construction of this installation.”
Meditations on Medication: The Pill Bottle Project was conceived by Fountain House Gallery and Studio artist Alyson Vega. The installation will be constructed entirely of (empty) orange prescription bottles. The project aims to generate conversation around medication, routine, recycling, plastic waste, insurance, accessibility, and more.
The pill bottles for this project have been collected from a diverse network of Fountain House members and staff, the tri-state users of NextDoor and BuyNothing groups, Hell’s Kitchen neighbors, and a substantial donation from M:25 Ministries. Collection is ongoing throughout the project and visitors are invited to contribute their own pill bottles.
During the spring, summer, and early fall months each year, more than two dozen arts, culture, and education organizations utilize space inside Governors Island’s historic former military houses through Governors Island Arts’ annual Organizations in Residence program — presenting exhibitions, holding free public programs, and hosting artist residencies.
Fountain House Gallery and Studio is funded, in part, by generous support from the Renate, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.
