Fountain House Gallery is proud to present SEEN: Portraits of Fountain House Artists by Photographer Carmel Fromson at the Church of the Heavenly Rest Undercroft Gallery, located at 1085 Fifth Avenue at 90th Street on Manhattan's Museum Mile.
Carmel Fromson has been photographing great works of art – paintings, sculpture, silver, glass and jewelry – for 30 years. Her professional background encompasses 19 years as staff photographer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, two years as staff photographer at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, and project photographer at the Corcoran Gallery. Fromson is Chair of the Fountain House Gallery Advisory Board , a Fountain House Council member and former Board member. She is the 2022 recipient of the Esther Montanez Leadership Award, established in memory of Fountain House Gallery’s Founding Director.
Said Fromson, “Fountain House Gallery artists are refreshingly honest, and it has been a great pleasure to celebrate them via portraits in which they will be ‘seen’ by the Fountain House community, and by the wider public. Many years ago, after the Gallery opened its doors in 2000, I was asked to photograph 10 works by 10 artists. I went into the project assuming that this was an art therapy program, but I was astonished by the quality of the work and came to the realization that this is not a ‘social work’ project; these are proficient contemporary artists.”
Each of the nearly 60 Fountain House Gallery artists featured in the show has selected a representative piece of their artwork to complement the portrait. The portraits were shot during several sessions held over the past year.
